Liquid silicone and oil

Previous Liquid Silicone or Oil Injections in the Mons or Labia: How Are They Treated?

Liquid silicone, oil and unknown substances cannot be broken down by the body and may cause problems months or years later. We start by finding out what is inside, then plan treatment that suits you.

Skin Oil Liquid silicone FibrosisMigration
Illustration: liquid silicone or oil spreads as tiny droplets through the tissue, and the body forms scar tissue around them until lumps develop.

What happens when these substances are injected

Liquid silicone, paraffin and various oils are not substances the body can break down, so it tries to wall them off with inflammation and scar tissue, eventually forming lumps (siliconoma or lipogranuloma). Some of the substance may move to the groin, inner thigh or labia minora. Problems can appear soon after injection or only after many years.

Common symptoms

  • Hard, palpable lumps or an uneven surface
  • Swelling, inflammation or redness that comes and goes
  • Skin discolouration, darkening, or tight, hardened skin
  • Asymmetry or a distorted shape
  • The substance moving to the groin or inner thigh
  • Pain when sitting for long periods, walking or during intercourse
Why it cannot be dissolved or suctioned out

The enzyme hyaluronidase dissolves only HA filler. Liquid silicone and oil are embedded in the tissue and scar tissue, so suctioning or squeezing them out is not possible and may worsen inflammation.

Our approach to care

Ultrasound assessmentIdentifies the type and extent of the substance. Some patients may also need an MRI.
Treating inflammation firstIf there is inflammation or infection, the doctor first settles it with medication.
Planning togetherWe explain whether monitoring, medication or surgery is advisable, with the benefits and limitations of each.
Surgical referral when neededWe coordinate with a surgeon or hospital suited to the extent of surgery and send on your examination results.
Follow-upOngoing care after treatment, and planning to restore contour once the tissue is ready.
Do not inject anything over silicone

Injecting filler or any other substance over an area containing silicone or oil may worsen inflammation and make correction harder. Always have an assessment and a plan first.

Frequently Asked Questions

I had the injection many years ago. Can it still be treated?

Yes, although the longer it has been, the more scar tissue there may be. The doctor will assess the extent with ultrasound before planning.

Can it be removed with laser or suction?

These substances are embedded in the tissue. Suction or laser cannot remove them completely and carries a risk of inflammation. If removal is needed, the main method is surgery.

If I have no symptoms, does it need to be removed?

Not in every case. The doctor will examine you and advise whether to monitor or to treat.
